NPR Religion correspondent Barbara Bradley Hagerty grew up as a Christian Scientist, but even though she left that denomination as an adult, she retained a fascination with the interplay between psychology, medicine and spirituality. Fingerprints of God is a report on the frontiers of research regarding spirituality and neuroscience, in locations ranging from an operating room to a peyote ceremony.

Here is a link to Hagerty's NPR page.

Skylight Paths publishing has a wonderful series of "spiritual biographies" for each of the four seasons. The "Summer" volume contains poetry and prose by authors ranging from Walt Whitman to Ray Bradbury to Anne Lamott.

Lee Robinson's wonderful poem, "The Garden" is one of the works included. Click on the book image above to read it, courtesy of Garrison Keillor's "Writer's Almanac."

Gazan doctor Izzel Abuelaish has every reason to feel bitter and vengeful. Even though he has constantly worked for peace and reconciliation between Gaza and Israel, Israeli shells hit his home on January 16, 2009, killing three of his daughters and a niece. Remarkably, this horrific tragedy has only reinforced Abulaish's determination to build bridges between the peoples of the Middle East. Earlier this year, The Guardian profiled Izzel Abuelaish.

Malidoma Patrice Some, a Dagara elder from Burkina Faso, is developing an increasingly large following in the West. Having made a passage through Western education back to his own indigenous traditions, he has a rare combination of knowledge and empathy that enables him to explain the spiritual traditions of Africa to those living outside that continent in a way they find useful and powerful. This book is an excellent introduction to his thought.

"If the Church were Christian" is a fascinating exploration of theology, church politics and history. Gulley is a Quaker and a PBS presenter. His previous books include "If Grace is True" and "if God is Love" and his writing is accessible without being simplistic.
