Our friend, Tony Sayer, was a participant in our celebration of the life of John O'Donohue in March.  He shared this poem with the group and is allowing us to share it with you.

The Old Gate

for John O'Donohue

When with the wind at our backs and the field of green around us moving like the pelt of a living animal and we come at last to the mountain whose solemn strength offers us anchorage.

Or when in the evening we walk beside the calm and almost silent river and see how tenderly it embraces and holds the dwindling light.

Or when in the midst of plain and uninspiring work a hinge in the heart loosens a little and we suddenly realize we can never gather up all the gifts this one ordinary moment wants to give us.

Or when in a circle of friends, long known or recently met, we recognize the shelter we have made for each other with word and touch.

In the lee of such moments, John, we may think of you. You stand at the threshold of the lives we dwell in.

"See how this old gate gets stuck," you say to us. "But see, we can nudge it open a little, so the heart can slip through."

New arrivals make an appearance most days.  We're featuring these titles on the New Arrivals table near the front of the store:

"The Great Awakening: Reviving Faith & Politics in a Post-Religious Right America" by Jim Wallis

"Living God's Politics" was an eye-opening book from the founder of Sojourners Magazine.  His new one is from HarperOne and is as passionate an well-thought as his previous best-seller.

"Drink Deeply with Delight" by Asheville's own Howard Hanger

Delight is one of Howard's dearest traits and it is beautifully apparent in this book from Lobster Press.

God's Problem By Bart D. Ehrman

"God's Problem How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question--Why We Suffer " by Bart D. Ehrman.

Dr. Ehrman is something of a rock star among Biblical scholars and theologians.  His writing is smart and accessible, full of brain and heart--something rare in the world of Bible scholarship.  This new one is one to chew over, comes from HarperOne.

"The Words of Jesus: a Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord with Reflections" by Phyllis Tickle.

This gem comes from Jossey-Bass and is another good study tool from a wonderful and award-winning writer. We carry a lot of Tickle's books, so come by and check out the canon of this prolific writer.

A Life at Work: The Joy of Discovering What You Were Born to Do

"A Life at Work: the Joy of Discovering What You Were Meant to Do" by Thomas Moore.

Moore's latest, from Broadway, is a small and lovely book from the author of "Care of the Soul". He tackles work this time and brings to this subject his own Jungian views, as well as a kind of Buddhist sensibility.
